Philipp Klaus: play:groundNYC - adventure playgrounds

free play, risk and keeping parents out

Presentation Abstract

In 2016 play:ground NYC opened ‘The Yard’, an adventure play space on an island just off the south tip of Manhattan. It has since become a favourite of children living in the city. At The Yard, children can use tools to create and destroy, play with other children, take risks or just hang out. Parents are not allowed in. There are playworkers that function as lifeguards and they try to intervene a little as possible.

Philipp was a founding board member and has spent many hours on the site as a playworker, both at the summer camp and during the weekends open to the public. He will present the concept of adventure playgrounds, speak about children taking risks and why children need spaces to play freely with as little adult supervision as possible.
