Ian Cunningham: It’s About Empowerment

Presentation Abstract

If we start with difference and create community to honour that, then how do we make certain that everyone has a way to be an active part of such a community? We know that introverted people are less likely to speak up in large meetings. What about those with disabilities such as sight or hearing? How can autistic people be able to be themselves and also part of a community? If we demand written communication what about the dyslexic? Do voting processes exclude minorities?

If we are to be serious about dealing with these issues then what kind of social processes and structures might be needed? These are not simple problems and often we have to consider what compromises are acceptable and what are not. If we stick to principles and want equality of opportunity then what practices might be possible?

The session will be an exploration of issues with reference to practical examples.
